Interview: Jen, the Tie Dye Diva
Thursday, August 28th, 2008
Jen, the Tie Dye Diva, has answered our questions this week.
1. What type of wearable art do you make?
I made handsewn and hand-dyed clothing, mostly for children. My signature style is “tie dye meets boutique”. I love showing people a new side of tie dye, it can be very elegant, sweet, sassy, trendy! It makes me really happy when people tell me “usually I hate tie dye, but I love yours!”
2. How many of a kind do you make? Why?
Except for my fleece animal hats, I make my handsewn clothing items only once or twice – once in the sample size, and occasionally I then use those photos to offer a second set in a custom size. My hand dyed items are custom – the buyer chooses the colors. So I don’t end up making a lot of the same thing! I love when buyers come up with new combinations – lavender and brown, gray and lime, lime and turquoise…
3. Do you wear your own creations? Which is your favorite? (Picture?)
I actually don’t wear my own creations, mostly because I specialize in children’s clothing. I have a very exciting wardrobe consisting of solid black, brown, and navy shirts – they are the l east likely to show random dye stains! My favorite current design is this one, tie dye flare pants and tunic top appliqued with hand-dyed fabrics that spell LOVE.
