Interview: Carrie’s Amazing Jewelry

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Carrie Spencer, the amazing jewelry designer behind DoBeadDoBeadDo Designs, answered our questions this week.

1. What type of wearable art do you make?

I make jewelry – bracelets, earrings, necklaces, anklets and pendants – and even some cellphone charms and keyrings. I also make chainmaille jewelry, kids’ and men’s jewelry as well.

2. How many of a kind do you make? Why?

I like to say I only make one-of-a-kind jewelry, but there was that bridal party for whom I made 5 of everything! I even have a hard time making earrings, because I have to make 2 matching ones. My goal is to make something new every day, and I’ve pretty much stuck with that for the past 3 years. And yes, if you add that up, it IS a ton of jewelry! Why? Because I like to wear something different every day!

3. Do you wear your own creations? Which is your favorite?

Of course I do! Most of my sales are from people who see what I’m wearing and ask “Hey, where did you get that?” or “Can you make me one too?” My personal favorite is a sterling silver vertabrae chainmaille bracelet. It’s so slinky and shiny. Every time I wear it someone comments on it.

Carrie provided the picture above of her vertabrae chainmaille bracelet.

What’s the point of showing you great wearable artwork if we don’t show you who’s making it?

Cyndi Lavin has been kind enough to answer our questions.

1. What type of wearable art do you make?
I mostly make jewelry, although I dabble in almost any type of mixed media wearables. Large, bead-embroidered necklaces are my favorites to make.

2. How many of a kind do you make? Why?
One of a kind. It would be pretty near impossible to repeat one of my designs, and I just don’t believe it’s worth while to do…there are too many other pieces left to be made!

3. Do you wear your own creations? Which is your favorite?
Yes. Most days I do wear something small that I’ve made…earrings, a pin, a bracelet, or one of my lampwork glass beads as a pendant. When I want more “presence”, I wear one of my necklaces.

Cyndi sent us the picture above, telling us it’s her favorite.
